Fasting sample requirements

In line with current guidance provided by the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM), for tests that require a fasting sample, we advise that the duration of the fast should be 12 hours.

This applies to the following tests:

  • Fasting glucose
  • Fasting lipids / triglycerides
  • Homocysteine (free and total)
  • Gut hormones / gastrin
  • Calcitonin
  • C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTx)
