LDL cholesterol

Background:

Part of lipid profile - evaluation of cardiovascular disease risk

LDL-cholesterol is calculated from total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations using the Friedewald calculation. This calculation is not appropriate for use in patients with plasma triglyceride > 4.5 mmol/L and patients with remnant hyperlipidaemia

Reference ranges:

Age range Reference ranges (mmol/L)
All ages/sexes 1.5 - 4

Results outside the reference range do not necessarily indicate disease. Similarly, results within the reference range do not preclude abnormality. Please contact the Duty Biochemist for discussion of individual patient results.
